Ride for Recovery
23 Mar 09
Members of the Australian Defence Force are organising and taking part in a charity bicycle ride from Canberra to Melbourne during the period 14 to 24 April 2009. The aim of the ride, titled Ride for Recovery is to raise funds for, and awareness of the burns victims of the Black Saturday bushfires. All money raised will be donated to the burns wards of The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where most of the burns victims were treated.
Up to ten Defence Members will be undertaking the ride over a distance of approximately 900km. A support crew will also travel with the riders in vehicles in order to transport spare parts, clothes, food and camping supplies for the riders. The Ride for Recovery participants are most grateful for the hospitality offered by the Mudgegonga community in the form of the Mudgegonga Hall.
The Ride for Recovery will make use of the Australian Defence Force Public Relations arm to create a profile for the ride in the public eye. Media opportunities will include Defence print and electronic media, regional television and radio, national television and radio networks, internet sites, and public events along the route of the ride. It is hoped that a large profile for the ride will encourage significant donations to The Alfred Foundation. Donations can be made to any member of the Ride for Recovery or through The Alfred Foundation’s secure website www.thealfred.org.au/alfredfoundation. Those donating via the web need only follow the directions on the page and select ‘Ride for Recovery 2009’ from the ‘Direct my donation to:’ box.
